Thunderbird Pow Wow

Come support our Pow Wow dancing teacher, and NE2SS ally, Louis Mofsie at the Thunderbird Pow-Wow this July 27, 28, and 29 at Queens County Farm Museum. (As you may recall Louis recently finished a series of pow-wow dance classes with the membership of NE2SS.) Louis is the founder of The Thunderbird American Indian dancers. We'd like all of you to come show your support for his humble support of our organization.

New York City 's oldest and largest powwow will feature three days of intertribal Native American dance competitions to which the public is invited. Over 40 Indian nations are represented at this spectacular event held in the apple orchard on the farm grounds. A large selection of quality Native American art, crafts, jewelry and foods are available.

Beading Class With Ben Geboe Recap, New Talks To Have A Monthly Beading Night

Last night's beading class with Ben Geboe (Yankton Sioux) was a blast. Ben taught those in attendance how to bead a necklace and a keychain in the way he was taught. It was a success because there are now talks to have a monthly beading class. Keep your eyes tuned here for more information on the next beading night.

In addition to learning how to bead, the night turned into a talking circle as everyone got to speak their mind on all sorts of issues ie, Land O Lakes Butter!

A 25 Year Retrospective of the Native American Response to AIDS through Poster Art

First-Annual National Native (American Indian, Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian) HIV/AIDS Awareness Day - MARCH 21, 2007

The NorthEast Two- Spirit Society is bringing it to New York on the first-ever National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day to highlight the historical and evolving Native response to HIV/AIDS through the art created by Native activists, care providers and people living with AIDS throughout this health crisis.

This evening will be a one of a kind presentation of culturally appropriate art work used for the last 25 years of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Native American communities to prevent the spread of the virus and to enhance community access to treatment.

Throughout the year, NE2SS offers cultural programming to its members. (Participation is free, donation are accepted but not required. All material for workshops and classes will be provided.)

Wednesday, February 28th -  Beaded Belt Buckles Workshop
This workshop will be lead by Ben Geboe. Ben is proud of the 3 years he spent at the Rosebud Sioux Reservation Mission in South Dakota. While there he learned: all styles of Beadwork and decorative color schemes, designs; improved upon his Lakota vocabulary; learned Native history; learned how to make Plains style dance outfits; participated in local Pow-Wows and feeds; learned Dakota vocabulary, grammar and usage; learned about traditional Dakota family and place names and much, much more!
